EDISTO BEACH AWARDED $2,000,000 The referendum to issue bonds for the purchase of the Bell Buoy property passed receiving 54% of the votes. This referendum allows the Town of Edisto Beach to sell bonds for the purpose of acquiring and renovating the Bell Buoy Property to be used by the Town of Edisto Beach as a public cultural and heritage facility and recreational facility, and for public waterfront access and economic development purposes. The Town was notified in a letter dated October 27, 2006, of a $2 million grant award by the South Carolina Conservation Bank. The grant requires no matching funds. Mr. Marvin Davant, Executive Director of the S. C. Conservation Bank stated, "We congratulate you on your successful request and appreciate your interest and commitment to conservation and improving the quality of life in South Carolina. The Town is also awaiting a final decision on a second grant application with the State Budget and Control Board for $1,350,000. The Review Committee will be meeting in early December and Edisto hopes to be notified of the status of this application soon thereafter. The Town's Bonding Attorney will begin steps necessary to prepare to issue bonds. However, the status of the second grant will affect the final bond issue. Town Officials are very aware that many local residents are concerned over how the property might be developed and continue to encourage the local voice to be heard.
